PSG vs Atletico Madrid LIVE: Club World Cup result, match stream and latest updates

Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain took their Munich momentum stateside as they beat Atletico Madrid comprehensively in their first Club World Cup game at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

Luis Enrique’s side romped to a 4-0 win to claim maximum points against a sub-par Atleti, with Fabian Ruiz, Vitinha, Senny Mayulu, and Kang-In Lee all getting on the scoresheet.

Clement Lenglet saw red for Diego Simeone’s side as the Spaniards’ began to implode, and their misery was compounded late on as substitutes Mayulu and Lee struck for numbers three and four.

Robin Le Normand was penalised in the final minute of stoppage time for handling Ibrahima Mbaye’s goalbound shot, and Lee tucked away the spot-kick to give Paris the perfect start to the new competition.

They face Botafogo in their next Group B game on Friday, with Atletico looking to pick themselves up against Seattle Sounders the day before.

PSG 3-0 Atletico Madrid

22:00 , Oli Gent

90+3 mins: Off the post! Mbaye shows wonderful feet and strength to get away from Llorente, and he gets the shot off, hitting the post with a slight touch by Oblak on its way through!

PSG 3-0 Atletico Madrid

21:59 , Oli Gent

90 mins: Four added minutes.

PSG 3-0 Atletico Madrid

21:54

Goal! 87 mins: It’s three, and it’s Senny Mayulu who gets in on the act. Just as he did in the Champions League final, he makes his mark. He slams home the third, with Zaire-Emery picking out Mbaye. It falls for Mayulu, who makes no mistake.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:49 , Oli Gent

82 mins: What a miss!

How on earth are Atleti not on the scoreboard? Simeone falls to his knees on the touchline as, with the goal gaping, Sorloth can’t convert a tap-in from merely two yards out as Correa flashes a gorgeous ball across the box!

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:36 , Oli Gent

70 mins: Senny Mayulu has come on for Paris, replacing Ramos up top.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:31 , Oli Gent

67 mins: Reinildo for Galan is a like-for-like at left-back, while Correa has taken de Paul’s berth on the right. Gallagher has gone to the left - not his natural position by any means - but he will be the workhorse down the sides, with the licence to invert and join the midfield to pack the engine room.

In the meantime, another of the substitutes - Reinildo - has been booked, for another needless trip.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:30 , Oli Gent

64 mins: Correa has been on the pitch for a matter of seconds, and he’s already been booked for a kick-out on Mendes.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:29 , Oli Gent

63 mins: Atleti are making a triple change, with Galan, Simeone, and de Paul all sacrificed. Gallagher, Reinildo, and Correa are all on.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:28 , Oli Gent

62 mins: Marquinhos is booked as he chops down Simeone.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:27

60 mins: No goal! Diego Simeone applauds sarcastically, as VAR disallows the goal, with Koke adjudged to have fouled Doue. The ball had seemed to have gotten away from the Frenchman, and that could be why Simeone feels agrieved. The scoreline stays at 2-0.

PSG 2-1 Atletico Madrid

21:25 , Oli Gent

Goal! 57 mins: Game on, and it’s Julian Alvarez! Atleti are back within one, and it’s brilliant from the Argentine. Doue goes down and loses the ball under challenge from Koke. Barrios latches on it, and he slides Alvarez in as the striker peels off to the right. Alvarez slots it hard and low into the corner beyond Donnarumma, and the deficit is halved. But the goal is being checked...

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:23 , Oli Gent

55 mins: Hakimi does well isolated down the right after a raking, searching pass from Vitinha to pick him out. The Moroccan wins the corner, which Mendes delivers with an inswinger, but Oblak punches clear.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:20 , Oli Gent

53 mins: Corner, Atleti, with Galan drives down the left on the overlap. He tries to get a cross in from the byline, but Hakimi does well to get across. It is a corner, which is worked out to de Paul to hit from distance, but Mendes blocks.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:17 , Oli Gent

50 mins: So close for Paris, as Kvaratskhelia comes a whisker away from a third. They stream forward with ease, and Kvaratskhelia cuts in and strikes with venom, but Oblak is equal to it, tipping it onto the bar!

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

21:16

48 mins: Koke has been on the pitch for three minutes and is booked already for a trip on Mendes. Atleti are looking to press more aggressively now with de Paul on the right.

Kick off

21:14 , Oli Gent

46 mins: We’re back underway. Koke has come on for Samuel Lino, with Simeone shifting to the left.

Half time

20:54 , Oli Gent

There’s the interval, and it’s been a one-sided first 45. The European champions have been superb so far - not quite their scintillating best - but they’ve not needed to be with Atletico as sloppy as they have been. 2-0 at the break.

PSG 2-0 Atletico Madrid

20:52 , Oli Gent

Goal! 45+2 mins: Within seconds, Paris go from one end of the field to the other. They explode forward on the break, with three, four passes exploiting the space left at the back by Atleti. Vitinha latches onto the final pass, and slots beyond Oblak for two!

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:51 , Oli Gent

45+1 mins: As the fourth official indicates three added minutes, Griezmann tests Donnarumma for the first time. The Italian parries, and Paris are on the break...

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:50 , Oli Gent

45 mins: Atleti piece their best move of the game so far together as Simeone and Llorente link up nicely down the right.

A quick one-two surpasses the Paris press as Llorente bursts clear, and he looks for Griezmann in the centre, but the Frenchman is ruled to be offside.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:46 , Oli Gent

42 mins: The party tricks are out from Doue - back on the right flank - as Galan is embarrassed by the Frenchman, who waltzes past him.

He looks to stand a clipped ball to the back post, but the Spaniards scramble it clear.

Paris come again.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:45 , Oli Gent

40 mins: It’s been a sloppy first half from Atletico.

Passes have gone astray, first touches have gone awry, and that collectivism that Simeone sides are built upon just doesn’t seem to be there at the moment, especially in the press.

There’s no real urgency to go and win the ball high up the field, nor to commit players forward.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:43 , Oli Gent

38 mins: PSG remain on the frontfoot as they stream forwards again in numbers. The ball is worked towards Ramos, who’s drifted into the left channel from his central-striking berth. The Portuguese cuts inside and strikes, but it’s straight down the throat of Oblak.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:39 , Oli Gent

34 mins: Atletico break down the left as Samuel Lino has space to run into, with Hakimi caught upfield.

The Brazilian checks back, looking for Javi Galan in support, but the left-back goes looking for a free kick down a blind alley, and Paris win the ball back.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:36 , Oli Gent

31 mins: An interesting tactical observation, with Kvaratskhelia and Doue switching flanks. That leaves the Georgian up against Galan and Lenglet, and Doue to have a run at Llorente and target the booked Le Normand.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:34 , Oli Gent

28 mins: That sums up Atletico’s opening half-hour.

Lenglet is pressed high by Ramos, and looks for Oblak with a backpass, but he screws it behind for a very cheap corner.

Afterwards, there is a fracas in the six-yard box between Fabian and Simeone, with the Atletico winger throwing himself to the floor as he receives a push from the goalscorer. He gets exactly what he wants, with Fabian’s name written in the referee’s book.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:31 , Oli Gent

26 mins: Robin Le Normand is the next Atleti player to be cautioned after a superb move through the thirds from Paris.

It all stems from the goalscorer Fabian, whose neat lay-off to Nuno Mendes starts the move, before the Spaniard steams ahead of his Portuguese team-mate in search of a return. He scampers after the channel ball, and gets his heels cynically clipped by a worried Le Normand.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:29 , Oli Gent

25 mins: Could that be a red card?

Simeone looks to be racing through on goal as he tussles with William Pacho.

The Argentine falls to the floor and screams for a red card, but the referee waves his claims away, deeming just a tangling of arms.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:27 , Oli Gent

23 mins: Vitinha teases the set piece in, but Atleti clear. The PSG press works once more, winning the ball in the attacking third in the second phase. It comes to nothing, however, and Atletico can have a venture forwards.

PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:26 , Oli Gent

21 mins: Clement Lenglet is the first name to be booked after a rash lunge on Hakimi that he needn’t have made.

There’s a real chance now for Paris to swing this free kick in from wide and cause chaos in the Atleti box.

Goal! PSG 1-0 Atletico Madrid

20:24 , Oli Gent

19 mins: But this time, they find their way through! It’s Fabian Ruiz with the strike, and the first goal of Group B is scored by a Paris Saint-Germain player.

The European champions’ high press wins the ball back high once more, and it’s worked well to the edge of the area, with Fabian able to run onto it and have a swipe with his left foot, arrowing the ball into the bottom corner beyond the desperate reach of Oblak.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:23 , Oli Gent

17 mins: Two sightings of goal for Paris, and some light work to warm Oblak up.

A ball is clipped up to Goncalo Ramos, who gets it back after winning hs knockdown, and his trivela strike is saved by the Slovenian goalkeeper.

Doue bursts onto the loose ball as Paris win the ball back high up the field, and the Frenchman gets to the byline, looking for the cutback. It falls to Kvaratskhelia on the spin after a brief melee, but that’s easy pickings for Oblak.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:20

15 mins: We’ve hardly seen Desire Doue down the Paris right.

The young starlet has been starved of touches so far, with much of PSG’s play funnelling down Kvaratskhelia and Fabian Ruiz’s side.

The Georgian hasn’t had any change out of Marcos Llorente, mind, as the Spaniard challenges the winger strongly but fairly to concede a throw.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:17 , Oli Gent

12 mins: Rodrigo de Paul is next to go down for Atleti, with the Argentine midfielder clutching his knee after a collision and a kick. That’s after some neat Paris interplay down the left, with Kvaratskhelia warming himself into the match.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:14 , Oli Gent

9 mins: Simeone is down clutching his face after an inadvertent collision with Nuno Mendes.

The winger is claiming an elbow, but the referee is not interested in his protestations.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:11 , Oli Gent

7 mins: It is more of a 4-4-2 for Atleti, with Galan at left-back and Samuel Lino ahead of him on the left of midfield.

On the opposite flank, Giuliano Simeone is operating ahead of Marcos Llorente, with Griezmann buzzing around Alvarez.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:10 , Oli Gent

5 mins: PSG’s first bit of possession results in Hakimi evading Javi Galan and looking to clip a cross in, but it’s well defended by Atletico.

PSG 0-0 Atletico Madrid

20:07 , Oli Gent

3 mins: Atletico are on the front foot early, winning the ball back and breaking forward. Alvarez is chopped down about 25 yards out, and there’s a chance to strike from here. Alvarez is over it... and it’s narrowly wide of Donnarumma’s near post!

Kick off

20:04 , Oli Gent

1 min: We are underway!

The players are out

19:53 , Oli Gent

Both sets of players are making their way out onto the pitch, as their Club World Cup campaigns get underway.

Who will come out on top?

15 minutes to kick off!

19:44 , Oli Gent

Anticipation is building around the Rose Bowl as kick off approaches.

Both sides have been sampling the Californian heat, with the sun beating down on the players as they go through their warm-ups.

No Dembele in PSG squad

19:16 , Oli Gent

Looking at both benches, Ousmane Dembele is the biggest name to miss out.

It was expected after the Frenchman suffered a quad injury on international duty.

Both sides have real strength in depth, however, with the Champions League winners able to call upon the likes of Lucas Hernandez - formerly of Atletico - Kang-In Lee, Lucas Beraldo, Warren Zaire-Emery, and Senny Mayulu - who scored the final goal on that remarkable night in Munich.

As for Atleti, Gallagher and Azpilicueta are both amongst the substitutes, while Jose Gimenez, Reinildo, Axel Witsel, and Nahuel Molina demonstrate their quality of depth in defence.

Sorloth is on the bench, alongside other attacking weapons like Thomas Lemar, Angel Correa, and the oh-so-reliable Koke.

PSG line-up

19:11 , Oli Gent

As for the Parisians, they are in their usual 4-3-3 shape, but there is no Dembele, as expected.

PSG confirmed XI: Donnarumma; Hakimi, Marquinhos, Pacho, Mendes; Neves, Vitinha, Fabian; Doue, Ramos, Kvaratskhelia.

Atletico Madrid line-up

18:50 , Oli Gent

It’s looking like a 3-5-2 from Diego Simeone.

Atletico Madrid confirmed XI: Oblak; Simeone, Le Normand, Galan, Lenglet, Lino; Barrios, de Paul, Llorente; Alvarez, Griezmann.

The teams are out!

18:47 , Oli Gent

We’re getting confirmation of the two team line-ups, which will be with you shortly...

Tonight's venue

18:23 , Oli Gent

Tonight’s encounter takes place at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

It is the 20th-largest stadium in the world, with a capacity of just under 90,000.

The city of Pasadena itself owns the stadium, which held the 1994 World Cup final, the 1999 Women’s World Cup final, and the 1984 Olympic gold medal match.

In 2023, it broke the MLS record for attendance in the ‘El Trafico’ derby between LAFC and LA Galaxy, with 82,110 attending.

Standard Sport's prediction

18:15 , Oli Gent

This is a tough one to call.

Paris will come into this as the obvious favourites given their recent Champions League triumph, but Atleti always have a way of upsetting the apple cart, particularly when it comes to frustrating star-studded attacks.

While PSG’s may lack the Galactico names that they once boasted, it is not as if their attacking trident is not packed with talent.

That is even without Dembele, with Ramos being a more-than adequate deputy, and one that will look to rough up the two Atletico central defenders, instead of his French team-mate’s intelligent movement as a false nine or peeling runs in behind to stretch the opposing defence.

The result will also depend on Atletico’s mentality - will they set out to contain their Parisian counterparts, who will they go after them, with Alvarez hounding them as the first wave of the press?

PSG to win, 2-1

Atletico team news

18:01 , Oli Gent

What about Atleti?

What formation will Simeone plump for? 3-5-2, or 4-4-2?

Despite missing the last game of the La Liga season, first-choice goalkeeper Jan Oblak should be available after playing for Slovenia over the international break.

Alexander Sorloth will hope to have fired his way into the starting XI with a hat-trick against Girona on the final day, but the Norwegian is expected to be amongst the substitutes with Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann in the squad and fit to play.

Could we see Gallagher or Azpilicueta? The former seems the more likely, having played off the left and in the engine room since his arrival from Chelsea last summer.

PSG team news

17:57 , Oli Gent

How might Luis Enrique line his team up this evening?

Ousmane Dembele is the biggest injury concern after the forward withdrew from France’s UEFA Nations League squad after their semi-final defeat to Spain.

Bradley Barcola also sustained an injury on international duty with Les Bleus, but is expected to be match fit for this one, while Goncalo Ramos could be in line to start up front for Dembele as a more natural centre-forward option.
