PSG vs Arsenal LIVE: Champions League final result, latest updates and fan reaction

PSG vs Arsenal LIVE

Paris Saint-Germain retained their Champions League title with a penalty shoot-out victory over Arsenal after a 1-1 draw in a cagey final in the Puskas Arena on Saturday.

Arsenal's Gabriel blazed his penalty over the crossbar to give PSG a 4-3 victory on spot kicks.

The French champions made the worst possible start after Kai Havertz fired ‌Arsenal into the lead in the sixth minute, lashing a rising ‌shot past PSG goalkeeper ‌Matvey Safonov.

It looked like PSG would find no way through the meanest defence in Europe but Ousmane Dembele levelled from the penalty spot in the 65th minute after a foul by Cristhian Mosquera on Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.

A scrappy period of ‌extra time could not separate the sides but PSG ‌held their nerve in the shootout to become the second club in the Champions ‌League era to win the ‌trophy in successive seasons. Read back the Champions League final LIVE below with our dedicated match blog, featuring expert insight and analysis from Matt Verri at the Puskas Arena.

Why Gabriel took the fifth penalty

21:38 , Alex Young

Mikel Arteta revealed Gabriel asked to take the decisive fifth penalty in Arsenal's Champions League final shootout defeat.

Viktor Gyokeres has taken ownership of penalties this season but otherwise Arsenal's three takers in recent seasons have been Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka and Kai Havertz.

That trio were unavailable for the shootout. Odegaard and Saka were replaced within the 90 minutes and Havertz came off before extra-time, after treatment on the touchline determined he was unable to continue.

Gyokeres, Gabriel Martinelli and Declan Rice converted from the spot, but Eberechi Eze missed the target and the pressure then fell on Gabriel's shoulders.

He stepped up to the spot knowing he had to score to extend the shootout - the centre-half lashed his penalty over the bar.

"He wanted to take number five," Arteta said.

"Obviously we have prepared and trained this moment. Normally the penalty takers would be Bukayo, Martin and Kai for sure.

"Today we knew that if we go to extra-time and penalties, the penalty takers would be different players.

"Still with the quality - when you have Ebs taking penalties in training, he doesn't miss any. But then you have to do it in this moment.

"We were unfortunate not to have the same precision and efficiency that they had and that's the reason we haven't won it."

Arsenal can be happy this has gone to extra-time, PSG had chances to win that late on. Bit more composure from Barcola and this would be done.

As it is, Arsenal are still alive.

PSG 1-1 Arsenal

18:37 , Alex Young

72min: Incredible outside-of-the-boot pass from Vitinha to get PSG out of trouble.

PSG 1-1 Arsenal

69min: Still no changes from PSG. All the momentum with them now.

Arsenal need to start creating.

PSG 1-1 Arsenal

18:32 , Alex Young

So, Havertz should move deeper.

GOALLLLLLLLLLLLL!

64min: Dembele makes no mistake! Brilliant, into the bottom left-hand corner as Raya dives the other way.

All square in Budapest!

Matt Verri at Puskas Arena

18:28 , Alex Young

Arsenal have had plenty to argue with the referee about in the last ten minutes but that is a clear penalty. Mosquera panicked for the first time and it's proved costly.

62min: Mosquera fouls Kvaratskhelia. Stone wall.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

18:18 , Alex Young

52min: A foul throw in a Champions League final!

Arteta applauds as PSG are penalised. Not a huge amount has changed yet in the rhythm of play.

You wonder when Luis Enrique will roll the dice.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

18:15 , Alex Young

49min: A fantastic run from Vitinha, driving through the centre and tries to find Dembele but Rice gets in between.

PSG get the ball back, but Doue’s attempt to switch play sees the ball sail out of play on the other side of the pitch.

Matt Verri at Puskas Arena

18:13 , Alex Young

Mosquera booked for time-wasting barely a minute after the restart.

The way this referee blew up for half-time as well, I don't think these Arsenal players want to test his patience.

Won't be afraid of making a huge and potentially match-defining decision.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

18:12 , Alex Young

47min: Mosquera has already been booked for time-wasting.

Second half!

18:08 , Alex Young

PSG players are already back out for the second half.

18:00 , Alex Young

As Matt reports, Arteta wil be extremely pleased with what he’s seen.

The most fearsome attack in Europe, perhaps the world, has not had a sniff.

Even when defending for 40 minutes, Arsenal have barely broken a sweat.

If ever a moment summed up a half. Arsenal take too long over that corner and the referee blows for half-time as Saka is about to swing it in. Bizarre.

Arsenal players less than impressed but when they get back into that dressing room they will be very, very satisfied. That was a massive 45 minutes from those players.

Half-time!

17:54 , Alex Young

47min: Oh! The referee doesn’t even let Arsenal take the corner, with Saka standing at the corner.

That is bizarre! And the break!

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:53 , Alex Young

46min: A big throw-in from Rice wins an Arsenal corner. Arsenal players celebrate winning a corner. Modern football.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

49min: Straight up the other end, PSG win a corner and then send the delivery nowhere near a team-mate.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:51 , Alex Young

48min: Oh my word, Arsenal should be 2-0 up!

A fine move started by Havertz, is almost rolled home by him inside the area after a one-two with Saka, but Marquinhos gets in a vital block.

The final was on the line then!

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:49 , Alex Young

47min: Dembele and Kvaratskhelia again try to carve open space, this time is it Lewis-Skelly with the boot in the right place.

Then Doue had a pop from distance, which is nowhere near.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:47 , Alex Young

46min: Six minutes added on.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:46 , Alex Young

43min: Arsenal almost breached for the first time as Nuno Mendes gets past Mosquera and fizzes in a cross, which Hincapie doesn’t deal with and almost puts it on a plate for a PSG forward.

Matt Verri at Puskas Arena

17:44 , Alex Young

Arsenal doing everything to make this as frustrating as possible for PSG.

Hakimi lost his head for a second there, throwing his arm out across Havertz's neck. Lucky for him it wasn't a bit higher or VAR might have had a look.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:42 , Alex Young

40min: Havertz tries to buy a foul off Hakimi as the ball goes out for a throw in. Nothing doing.

Not a sniff for the Ballon d’Or winner.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

Rice whips in a cross towards Gabriel and Havertz, but the defender is penalised for crashing into PSG players.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:34 , Alex Young

32min: Nuno Mendes went down and stayed down - for a long time - after a collision with Gabriel. His team-mates didn’t kick the ball out and, eventually, he gets up.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:32 , Alex Young

30min: Dembele gets on the ball on the right but is immediately fronted up by two red shirts.

He goes again, gets a cross in but it’s aimless and easy for Gabriel to head clear.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:30 , Alex Young

28min: Safonov getting ice to the back of his head. Looks like he will continue though.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:29 , Alex Young

26min: Brilliant low cross from Saka, which PSG keeper Safonov dives into bodies to palm away and has come off badly.

He may not be able to continue.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:27 , Alex Young

25min: We restart with an Arsenal throw-in.

Arteta will be very happy with how this game has gone so far, with a quarter done.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:25 , Alex Young

23min: Time for a drinks break.

Matt Verri at Puskas Arena

17:25 , Alex Young

Been a better little spell for Arsenal, getting on the ball and just taking the sting out of PSG's pressure.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:24 , Alex Young

22min: Hincapie gets a warning from the referee for time-wasting.

It’s going to be a long game.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:23 , Alex Young

21min: There is absolutely nothing in the box for PSG.

No target man to aim at. Saliba and Gabriel loving life.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:21 , Alex Young

18min: Pass, pass, pass, pass from PSG.

Arsenal getting a boot in when it matters, though.

Matt Verri at Puskas Arena

17:17 , Alex Young

Pattern of the match has been cemented now. PSG will dominate possession - can they break down the red wall?

A long, long way out for Arsenal to just rely on their defence though. Have to keep offering a threat at the other end.

PSG 0-1 Arsenal

17:17 , Alex Young

14min: Wave after wave of PSG attacks, but Arsenal are as yet not too bothered.
