PSG prepared to play home Champions League matches abroad after Ligue 1 cancellation, says Nasser Al-Khelaifi

Paris Saint-Germain will play their remaining home Champions League matches overseas if it is not possible to do so in France, according to president Nasser Al-Khelaifi.

On Tuesday, it was revealed that the 2019-20 season in the top two divisions of French domestic football, Ligues 1 and 2, would not be able to resume after Prime Minister Edouard Philippe confirmed a ban on all sporting events - even those held without fans - until at least September amid the Covid-19 crisis.

Dominant PSG were 12 points clear of nearest challengers Marseille with 11 games remaining as they pursued a seventh Ligue 1 title in eight years, but it remains to be seen if a title will be awarded or relegations and promotions allowed, with the Ligue de Football Professionnel (LFP) expected to meet next month to decide on such matters.

The Parisians are also still afloat in the Champions League and were favourites to reach the quarter-finals of the competition before football's coronavirus-enforced shutdown after goals from Neymar and Juan Bernat sealed a 2-0 victory over Borussia Dortmund in the first leg of their last-16 tie, which was held behind closed doors at the Parc des Princes on March 11.

Thomas Tuchel's side had earlier topped Group A, ahead of Real Madrid, Club Brugge and Galatasaray.

PSG president Al-Khelaifi said the club respected the decision of the French government to rule out sporting events until September and confirmed that they would fulfil their remaining home European ties overseas if necessary.

"We respect of course the French Government decision," he said.

"We plan on competing in the Champions League with UEFA agreement - wherever and whenever it is held.

"If it is not possible to play in France we will play our matches abroad subject to the best conditions for our players and the safety of all our staff."

PSG's domestic rivals Lyon are also still in the Champions League and hold a 1-0 lead over Juventus in their last-16 encounter.
