PSG outcast could present Newcastle United with short term solution to transfer need

PSG manager Christophe Galtier insists the club are “working closely” with Mauro Icardi to help him find a new club. Newcastle United have previously been linked with the 29-year-old, who only started 10 Ligue 1 games in 2021-22.

Galtier omitted the Argentine from his squad for their 5-0 win against Clermont Foot last weekend. Icardi has struggled for game time in recent seasons, with superstars Lionel Messi, Neymar and Kylian Mbappe taking centre stage.

The Parisians have also recruited former Toon target Hugo Ekitike to their ranks - meaning Icardi’s days in the French capital look numbered. Speaking ahead of their home clash against Montpellier, Galtier confirmed they are working on an exit that suits all parties.

“His absence last weekend was linked to a purely sporting choice,” he said. “I saw Mauro at the beginning of the week to tell him that I will restrict the group and I don't want to work with 25 outfield players.

“It is not possible to have players on the sidelines - I won't repeat myself. The club is working closely with Mauro to find the best possible solution.

“Mauro has had very little playing time in the last few seasons. I think it is important for him to get back on track; he needs to get back into the game. In the interest of Mauro and also in the interest of the club, we should find the best possible compromise.”

Icardi would provide an elite - albeit eccentric - option to Eddie Howe’s frontline. It is no secret that Toon chiefs are looking to add firepower to their ranks.

The 29-year-old does not provide a long-term solution but he does have a track record of finding the net. At Inter Milan, Icardi established himself as one of Europe’s deadliest strikers - bagging 111 goals in 188 Serie A outings.

Football analytical site transfermarkt.com valued his price tag at a staggering £90million just three years ago. However, a long spell in the footballing wilderness, combined with well-documented personal issues, has seen his stock plummet.

A sky-rocketing wage bill means PSG are looking to offload several unwanted stars before the September 1 deadline. Italian outlet Calciomercato reported earlier this year that Newcastle were monitoring his situation - but talk cooled.

Supporters realise Newcastle are, potentially, just one Callum Wilson injury away from derailing their season. Could signing Icardi be the statement signing needed before the transfer window slams shut?
