PSG chief reveals what he told Barcelona president about Lionel Messi transfer

PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was keen to remind Barcelona chief Joan Laporta that Lionel Messi was free to talk to other clubs as he considered his options.

The Argentine is yet to commit his future to the Catalans, although he is expected to remain at the Nou Camp.

PSG and Manchester City's financial power meant they were linked with moves for Messi earlier this season.

He expressed a desire to leave Barcelona last summer which allowed several clubs to circle.

And Al-Khelaifi revealed that he made it clear to Laporta that his prized asset was free to explore other avenues.

"I told him that Messi was at the end of his contract and that all the clubs have the right to talk to him," he told L'Equipe.

The PSG chief refused to confirm whether discussions had been held with Messi over a switch to Paris.

But he underlined the fact that PSG were an attractive club to join.

He added: "All the great players want to come to PSG and I say this to make things clear, not to answer about Messi."

Neymar has recently signed a new deal at the Parc des Princes.

The Paris star made a world-record move from Barcelona in 2017 but has been linked with a return to Spain.

Now though he has committed his future to the Ligue 1 giants until 2025.

Al-Khelaifi though has revealed that Barcelona made moves to re-sign Neymar but saw their efforts knocked back.

He said: "It was not difficult to reach an agreement. If the issue dragged on, it was due to the pandemic, but I never had doubts.]

"Despite the fact that the club you mention - referring to Barça - He tried to recruit Neymar until the end. Obviously, we rejected him."

PSG's focus will now turn to Kylian Mbappe, who is due to enter the final 12 months of his contract.

Real Madrid and Liverpool are among the clubs linked with the World Cup winner but Al-Khelaifi is confident with how things are progressing.

He added: "All I can say is that things are going well [with Mbappe]. I hope we can reach an agreement. This is Paris, this is his country.

"He has a mission, not only to be a footballer, but to promote Ligue 1, his country and its capital."
