PSG begin Kylian Mbappe's rebuild with Luis Campos 'set to join this week'

Paris Saint-Germain have already begun their expected rebuild just a day after Kylian Mbappe confirmed he would be extending his stay in the French capital.

Mbappe is understood to have made a number of demands in return for signing a three-year deal. He snubbed a move to La Liga giants Real Madrid to extend his PSG contract, with the Ligue 1 club pulling out all the stops to keep him.

One of the demands they accepted was to replace sporting director Leonardo. The Brazilian has spent three years in the role in his second spell as an executive at the Parc des Princes, though he has been blamed for a number of mistakes in the transfer market.

Those mistakes, combined with frequent embarrassing exits from the Champions League, have now cost him his job. And according to Le Parisien, PSG have lined up Luis Campos as his replacement as sporting director.

Campos is said to be 'close' to Mbappe and his family, and is set to be given control of PSG's sporting strategy. Among his responsibilities will be transfers and any work done at the club's Camp des Loges training ground.

PSG are hoping that the Portuguese executive can bring about a revolution amongst the squad's mentality. Lateness, leaks to the press and 'incompatible' behaviour has all been cited as being behind the desire to change.

Campos' purview over transfers will potentially leave any talks opened by Leonardo 'dead in the water'. The move to sack Leonardo will likely delight Mbappe, who is not thought to have had a positive relationship with PSG's now former sporting director.

Mbappe will also be pleased to reconnect with Campos, with the duo previously working together at Monaco. During their time at Stade Louis II, the pair helped the Monégasques to win their first Ligue 1 title for 17 years.

That title win earned Mbappe a mega-money move to PSG, where he has gone on to become one of the world's best players. Campos meanwhile opted to join Lille, where he helped to build the squad that shocked many to win the French top-flight last term.

He has been out of work since leaving Les Dogues in December 2020, following a change of ownership at Stade Pierre-Mauroy. Campos has been in Paris over the past week, with confirmation of his appointment expected this week.

Campos' arrival will be just the first step in a major overhaul expected to take place at the Parc des Princes this summer. That is an overhaul driven by Mbappe, who on Saturday expressed his delight at committing his future to PSG.

"I am convinced that here I can continue to grow at a club that provides everything necessary to perform at the highest level. I am also delighted to continue to play in France, the country where I was born, where I have grown up and where I have made my name," he said.

"I would like to thank the President, Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, for his trust, his understanding and his patience. I would also like to thank all the fans of Paris Saint-Germain, both in France and around the world, for their support, especially in recent months. Together, side by side and ambitious, we will make magic in Paris.”
