PS5 release date, price, specs: What we know so far about upcoming Sony console

Details about the PS5 have been revealed (Picture: Unsplash)

Exciting new details have been revealed about the upcoming PlayStation console in a wide-ranging interview with system architect Mark Cerny.

Sony has so far managed to keep a lot of details about the "next-gen" console - dubbed the PS5 - under wraps, but Mr Cerny hinted at a number of exciting features fans can look forward to.

Not only is the PS5 supposedly a "true game changer" in the world of gaming, but it's also something we could be seeing on our shelves fairly soon.

Here is everything we know so far about the PS5.

Release date

According to Mr Cerny's interview in Wired, the PS5 won't be released this year, and Sony hasn't said anything in public about a release date.

However, rumours suggest we could be seeing it on our shelves in 2020.

Price

Again, Sony is playing its cards quite close to the chest on this one and Mr Cerny didn't reveal anything in the interview, but it's fairly sensible to suggest the console's price at launch will be similar to previous consoles.

However, again this is all rumour and will depend on a number of factors at launch.

Name

While it's been widely tipped the console will be called the PS5, Sony has yet to finally confirm the name.

Specs

This is where it gets exciting, with the Wired interview confirming a number of exciting new tech features we can expect in the new console.

One of the biggest changes with the PS5, aside from it being faster and more powerful than the PS4, is that it will be backwards compatible.

This means that gamers will be able to play PS4 games on the new console, as it is based in part on the PS4's architecture.

Wired also confirmed the PS5 will have a disc drive, and won't just be a "download-only machine", in part because it is based on the PS4.

The next-gen console will also support 8K graphics and faster loading times, thanks in part to an AMD chip at its core.

The CPU, which is based on AMD's Ryzen line, has eight cores of Sony's new 7nm Zen 2 architecture.

Meanwhile the GPU is based on Radeon's Navi family which allows for ray tracing - a first for gaming consoles and means the PS5 mimics light.

An SSD - solid state drive - will act as the console's storage, making loading times along with read and write speeds, much faster.
