PS5 Pro AI Frame Generation Is Coming Soon—Here's What It Will Bring to Console Games

The PlayStation 5 Pro is getting another massive upgrade from Sony as it was recently confirmed that an "AI frame generation" feature will arrive on the consoles and introduce new kinds of improvements.

It is widely known that Sony has already introduced improvements to the hardware and software of the new console, with the company recently upgrading the PSSR AI upscaling feature.

PS5 Pro AI Frame Generation Is Coming Soon

An interview with PlayStation 5 lead system architect Mark Cerny (via the Digital Foundry) has revealed that PlayStation's collaboration with AMD, called "Project Amethyst," will soon bring an important upgrade, pointing to AI frame generation.

The Sony executive confirmed that a machine learning-based frame generation is coming to PlayStation platforms soon, but Cerny said that fans should not expect any further updates this year.

That said, the lead system architect of the PlayStation 5 platform said that "FSR Frame Generation is also based on co-developed technology. I'm very happy with how that work is progressing, and an equivalent frame generation library should be seen at some point on PlayStation platforms."

Sony Lead Unveils AI Frame Generation Features

Cerny said that the new PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) feature uses the same core algorithm that the company co-developed with AMD, based on the FSR Redstone Upscaling or the next-gen FidelityFX Super Resolution.

This is the all-familiar FSR4 from AMD, but the company no longer calls it using numbers, but with the new moniker, the FSR "Redstone."

While Sony's PSSR relies on artificial intelligence to help enhance the game's visuals via each frame and pixel, the new ML or AI Frame generation feature will complement the PS5 Pro's existing technology to take it a step further and also help deliver smoother gameplay.

Machine learning-based frame generation technology will help the PlayStation's upscaling deliver improved visuals, gameplay, frame rate, and more, all while reducing the load on the GPU.
