PS5 latest: Argos tipped to restock consoles in stores 'next week' amid Amazon hype

Gamers' hopes of getting their hands on a PS5 console were dashed today as one of the only stockists quickly sold out.

The PlayStation PS5 was released in November 2020, but actually buying one has been impossible for many shoppers.

Earlier today Argos had some for sale online, but now seems to have sold out after a rush of demand.

Its website said: "Sorry, PlayStation®5 is currently unavailable. We're working hard to make this available as soon as possible."

The shortage is due to high demand during the pandemic, a global shortage of microchip processors and even the Suez Canal being blocked recently by the Everready cargo ship.

It's proven so difficult to track a PS5 down that dedicated Twitter accounts exist to give updates on when shops might restock the console.

It will cost you £449 for the full console, while a Digital Edition without a disc tray is priced at £359.

The PS5 has an 8-core AMD Zen 2-based CPU at 3.5GHz, 16GB of GGDR6 RAM and 825GB of internal storage.

It is meant to be 100 times faster than the PS4, so games will load in extra-quick time.

At the moment no shop has PS5s in stock, though one retailer tipped to have them soon is Amazon, or Argos in its physical stores.

But if you are really desperate and want one now, private sellers are listing PS5 consoles for sale on eBay.

However, most of these are being sold for a big profit.

The disc version of the PS5 is being sold for up to £748, compared to its £449 normal retail price.

Gamers should keep checking online shops to nab the new PlayStation (PA)

Even a disc PS5 that has been opened and used is being sold for £650.

The cheaper Digital Edition is selling for up to £549, though it would cost just £359 if bought new.

Shoppers are advised to keep checking major retailers if you they want to snap one of the consoles up.

Good options to buy the Sony PlayStation 5

PlayStation has been approached for comment.

If you want a console but haven't got your heart set on the PS5, the new Xbox series has had supply shortages but nothing on the scale seen by its PlayStation rival.

The Xbox Series X (£449) and Xbox Series S (£249), also launched last November.

The Series S is the digital sibling to the more powerful Series X.

The Series S has a 8-Core AMD Zen 2 CPU, clocked at a 3.6GHz, 10GB of GGDR6 RAM, and an AMD GPU clocked at 4 Teraflops.

Storage for the machine is 512Gb of internal memory and has the same Xbox Velocity Architecture as the Series X for speedy loading and fast resume functionality.

Plus, the games subscription service Xbox Game Pass offers more than 100 games starting at £1 for three months.
