PS5 consoles sold on eBay for more than twice their value on Playstation 5 launch day

Desperate shoppers are buying Playstation 5s for twice their value on eBay as scalpers take advantage of the huge demand for the latest Sony games console.

Those who pre-ordered A PS5 earlier in the year can expect theirs to arrive today, while retailers including Game, Very and John Lewis put more Playstation 5 consoles on sale today.

Demand is so big for the fifth generation Playstation that shoppers have struggled to find any online, as retailers only have limited stock.

With Christmas under six weeks away, some are turning to eBay, where sellers are touting the consoles for more than twice their value and auctions are doubling their price.

eBay sellers who say they have secured PS5s on pre-order are listing the consoles at buy-it-now prices of more than £1,000. The RRP for the disc version of the PS5 is £449.

Live auctions are attracting near four-figure bids too.

ChronicleLive found a listing for a disc version PS5 with a top bid of £970, with 20 hours of the auction to go. At the time of writing, the PS5 had 32 bids. Whoever wins it will also have to fork out £15 for postage and packaging.

Another account is offering a 'buy now' price of £1,075, a mark up of 139%. The listing shows that seller has already flogged 11 PS5s and has just one left.

An auction which ended on Thursday lunchtime - shortly after the consoles went on sale on Amazon, ended with an £820 winning bid for a £449.99 PS5, not including a £20 postage fee.

The eBay scalpers were slammed by people on social media.

"Pretty annoying seeing the amount of PS5 consoles selling on eBay for ridiculous amounts of money. Scum bag scalpers and idiots who are willing to pay them," tweeted Steven Higgins.

Disappointed Mum Samantha Cox tweeted the official Playstation account: "Please advise how I tell my 14 year old son he can’t have a PS5 for Xmas as the only ones that sold ended up with people who didn’t even want them and are now selling them for double on eBay?"

Josh Barton tweeted: "It's a sad sight to see all those #PS5 listed on ebay at such insane prices. Cretins."
