A sequel to romantic tearjerker PS I Love You is getting made 13 years after the first film was released.
Upon its release in 2007, the original film – based on Cecelia Ahern’s book of the same name – was met with negative reviews but became a bx office hit, grossing $156m (£120m) on a $30m budget.
It follows a character named Holly Kennedy (Hilary Swank) who receives letters from her late husband in the aftermath of his death, that he wrote in order to help with her grief.
The sequel will be adapted from Ahern’s novel Postscript. Film rights, Variety reports, have been picked up by Alcon Entertainment.
It’s set seven years later as Holly is asked to share the story of her late husband’s letter hunt on a podcast, in the hope it will inspire others to leave notes behind for their loved ones following their death.
Holly, though, is unsure whether she wants to revisit her past.
Ahern described Postscript as “a deeply emotional project”.
She added: “[It] is the PS to my PS and while it is a sequel, it is also a story that stands about living a purposeful life in the face of illness, grief and loss. I hope that new readers and PS, I Love You fans alike will embrace Holly’s new journey.’
Swank is expected to return for the sequel, but fans of the original film are hoping Gerard Butler – who play Holly’s husband – will return in some way.
