Prue Leith hopes her bright outfits inspire older women to wear more colour

How about this for a bit of sunshine on Leith… Bake Off star Prue in a dazzling yellow scarf.

And the 81-year-old has told how she hopes all her colourful outfits have given older women the confidence to brighten up their wardrobes.

The TV favourite, also known for her snazzy specs, said: “I hope I’ve inspired more older women to be a bit braver with colour. Women say to me a lot, ‘You’re so brave. I’d never dream of wearing those colours.

“‘I used to when I was young, but it’s not suitable for me now because I’m over 50.’ What rubbish. Since when is colour reserved for children?

“I’ve never been really interested in fashion. I’m just more interested in colour. I like colour.”

The new series of Bake Off started on Tuesday night on Channel 4, with 12 new contestants.

And Prue said she plans to stay with the show for a while yet and can never imagine retiring fully.

She added: “Well, to be honest, like most old people, I don’t feel all that old. It doesn’t occur to me to say to somebody when they ask, ‘Would you like to do this programme or write this or do a podcast or something?’

“It doesn’t occur to me to say, ‘Do you know, I’m 81? You shouldn’t be asking me this.’ I just think, ‘That’ll be fun to do, why not?’

“But I’m going to try to do less stuff because one of the things the pandemic has taught me is how wonderful it is to be at home.”

During the filming of this year’s Bake Off in the summer, it was announced that Prue was being made a dame for services to food, broadcasting and charity.

And she told how producers and co-star Paul Hollywood made her feel special.

Prue added: “It was really nice, the production company organised this little party and Paul bought a terrific bottle of champagne.

“Paul had the notice on my shepherd’s hut that said ‘Prue’ changed to Dame Prue.

“There was a lot of pretend bowing and scraping. It was amusing.

“Everybody’s on first names, so nobody’s called me Dame Prue yet.”

  • Bake Off continues on Channel 4 on Tuesday at 8pm.
