Provorov excited for Flyers' camp, says he's a 'better player' than last year

There will be 21 players at the Flyers' rookie camp, and defenseman Ivan Provorov and right winger Travis Konecny are the two that appear to have the best chance of making the big-league team.

Konecny is considered a long shot, but Provorov seems on the verge of landing a spot. Both players will have to return to their junior teams if they don't stay with the Flyers.

The Flyers' three-day rookie camp, which kicks off their 50th-year anniversary, started Monday.

Along with Provorov and Konecny, the camp will feature defensemen Travis Sanheim and Sam Morin, right winger Nicolas Aube-Kubel, left winger Danick Martel, and center Radel Fazleev.

Provorov was the seventh overall pick in the 2015 draft and was named the Western Hockey League's top defenseman last season.

"I'm definitely more comfortable this year," said the 6-foot-1, 201-pound Provorov after going through some testing drills in Voorhees on Sunday. "I know all the guys here. I know the prospects pretty well because I've been here for two development camps and I know (the veterans) a little bit.

"I'm definitely a better player than I was last year. Bigger, stronger and a year older."

Provorov, 19, said he "got better in all areas of my game" last season, when he had 21 goals, 73 points and a plus-64 rating, helping Brandon win the Western Hockey League championship.

The camp will also give the brass a chance to observe Phil Myers, an intriguing 6-5, 209-pound defenseman who was signed as a free agent last year. He starred in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season.

Five players selected in the 2016 draft will be at camp: forwards Pascal Laberge (second round), Carsen Twarynski (third round), Connor Bunnaman (fourth round), and Anthony Salinitri (sixth round); and goalie Carter Hart (second round).

Alex Lyon, signed as a free agent out of Yale, will be the other goalie in rookie camp.

Veterans open camp Sept. 23 in Voorhees.

Tuesday's camp will start at 10:30 a.m. On Wednesday, the Flyers' rookies will travel to East Meadow, N.Y., to face the New York Islanders' rookies at 6 p.m.

All of the on-ice sessions in Voorhees are free and open to the public.
