'Proud town camper' wins NT Local Hero award for work campaigning against family violence

Social worker Shirleen Campbell co-coordinates the Tangentyere Women's Family Safety Group in Alice Springs.

An Indigenous anti-domestic-violence campaigner and a flight surgeon who oversaw Cyclone Tracy evacuations are among this year's NT Australian of the Year winners.

Alice Springs-based social worker Shirleen Campbell was recognised as the NT Local Hero for her work as a coordinator of the Tangentyere Women's Family Safety Group.

The program is run by female leaders from Alice Springs town camps and gives residents experiencing violence a voice.

The Warlpiri and Arrernte woman describes herself as a "proud town camper", who grew up in Lhenpe Artnwe or Hoppy's Camp, one of the region's 16 town camps.

"It's pretty awesome coming from the town camp with these big ideas and great solutions and sharing it with others, having that two-way learning," Ms Campbell said at the ceremony in Alice Springs.

"It's not just my award, it's for the whole of Tangentyere Women's Family Safety Group and we're fighting for other women as well, it's also theirs."

Ms Campbell accepted the award with her daughter.

"Having her to watch the award and listening to the inspirational stories, I feel stoked," she said.

In March last year, Ms Campbell was one of several Aboriginal women from Alice Springs who travelled to Canberra to deliver a message outside Parliament House.

They placed flowers on the lawn in memory of women killed or injured by partners or relatives — two of Ms Campbell's aunts were killed by their partners in 2014 and 2015.

Ms Campbell said her education program had been successful because it was locally driven.

"It's got to be out there [in the town camps], grass roots," she said.

"People have got to start understanding and listening to the good work we're doing."

Ms Campbell's documentary about the program, 'Not Just a Number', premiered at the Darwin International Film Festival this year.

Cyclone Tracy flight surgeon NT Australian of the Year

Darwin doctor Geoffrey Thompson is the Northern Territory Australian of the Year for his work as a flight surgeon and sports physician.

After Cyclone Tracy flattened Darwin in 1974, Dr Thompson oversaw the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) evacuations of the city.

The 74-year-old lost his own home in the devastation but helped treat and evacuate severely injured residents in the aftermath of the cyclone.

"I'm blown away actually, just being nominated was unexpected," Dr Thompson said.

His speciality is sports medicine and he is currently the chief medical officer for the Australian Paralympic Committee, which he described as his most rewarding job yet.

"These inspirational people give back to me every bit and more than I give to them," he said.

"All that I've done in the past has really prepared me for that."

As a sports physician, Dr Thompson said he would like to see more doctors promoting exercise programs to patients.

"It's something that the medical profession has lost a bit recently and I guess my passion is to see that introduced back into people's lives," he said.

Artist and activist Banduk Marika from the north-east Arnhem Land community of Yirrkala is the Senior NT Australian of the Year.

Ms Marika is known not just for her paintings of ancestral creation stories but her cultural activism, including involvement in a court case launched against a company that illegally reproduced her work in Vietnam.

Mitchell Ford, a 19-year-old from Katherine, won the NT Young Australian of the Year for setting up a clothing brand that aims to decrease the stigma surrounding mental health issues.

The winners of the NT Australian of the Year awards become nominees for the Australian of the Year awards in Canberra on January 25 next year.
