'Proud of my choice' - Inter Milan legend explains Liverpool snub

Former Inter Milan goalkeeper Francisco Toldo has revealed he turned down an offer from Liverpool to stay with the Italian giants.

And the former Italian international, who signed for Inter in a £23.8m deal from Fiorentina in 2001, says he was proud of his devotion to the Serie A club.

Toldo spent nine years at the San Siro, playing 235 games and winning four titles, but was relegated to second choice in 2005 and struggled to regain his place.

Despite that, he says he was happy with the decision to turn down European giants such as the Reds, Benfica and Bayern Munich.

“I wanted to stay at Inter, so I declined many proposals,” Toldo said.

“Winning in this club is different; it is the satisfaction of arriving at the port after going through a storm.

“For the sake of Inter, I said no to Benfica, Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Real Madrid. I retired earlier, but proud of my choice.”
