A former US marine has been lauded for challenging Donald Trump's provocative comments on introducing ID cards for Muslims living in America.
The controversial Republican nominee suggested he wasn't opposed to the idea of opening a database to register Muslims living in the US during an interview with Yahoo Politics in the wake of the Paris attacks.
Trump reportedly refused to rule out requiring Muslims to carry special ID, provoking outrage.
Former US marine Tayyib Rashid, who describes himself as a “proud Muslim marine” on his Twitter page, responded by sharing a picture of his military ID and asked Trump: “I already carry a special ID badge. Where’s yours?”
Rashid said he was a serving marine from 1997 to 2002. His tweet has been shared over 5,600 times.
Rashid spoke about his position as a Muslim and a former Marine after the Chattanooga shooting in July and said Muslims in America stood with victims and their families.
He stressed that terrorists committing brutal acts are representing their own barbarity and are nothing to do with Islam, telling Al Jazeera: “We’ve heard it over and over again. The word Islam means peace. As Muslims we have been commanded to live in peace and respect our neighbours. Islam teaches that the killing of one innocent person is the killing of all mankind.”
