Proud Dublin daughter shares brilliant 'little library' her dad created for Donaghmede community

A proud Dublin daughter has shared a brilliant idea by her dad that encourages reading and the recycling of already read books during lockdown.

The idea, which encourages people to take a book and leave a book to create a little community library, has taken on a life of its own as similar libraries pop up all across Ireland.

Cliona Keogh spoke to Joe Duffy on RTE's Liveline about the lovely idea which her dad created in Donaghmede.

The idea also inspired others to share their libraries around the country, with creations shared from far and wide across Ireland.

Cliona said: "My dad is so talented. He's unbelievable. He built it and I put a sign on it that says 'The little library. Take a book, leave a book'.

"The idea is that if you want to read a book and you're stuck in the house or you don't have any access to books...that you come along and if you see a book that you like, you can take it and then when you've finished it you can bring it back or you can replace it with another book that you've read previously that you're finished with so someone else can read."

The brilliant idea has captured the imagination of neighbours and has especially been a hit with youngsters in the area.

"Friends and family have been so kind," said Cliona.

"We've had lots of donations. I had a good few books myself because I like to read so I put a lot of my own books in.

"I had a collection of Roald Dahl and I put them in. They were so successful. All the kids on the road have taken them."

Anne Leavy living in Athboy, Co Meath shared the "Little Blue Box Library" that can be found in Fosterfields and is quite inviting for readers with a lovely bench beside it.

There's also a free library in Ballinderry in Mullingar, Co Westmeath as well as a Little Free Library in Kells, Co Kilkenny.
