Adrian Lam's delight at Wigan Warriors defence - but Oliver Gildart suffers injury setback

Adrian Lam enthused about his side's defensive rearguard following their tough victory over Leeds Rhinos.

Wigan picked up their fourth straight win as they won 19-6 in a victory that was created by a solid defensive effort.

Not for the first time this season, Wigan started slow and spent the opening quarter defending their own half.

But once again they defended their errors and came up with points during their first furore downfield.

By his own admission, Lam is keen to see his side start better, but beamed at his side's ability to defend their own line.

"I'm Just proud of the buys for hanging in there," he said.

"At the start of the game we had four or five sets on our own line, but we were really resilient and got some points at the other end.

"That's a good sign of a side prepared to work hard for each other.

"I was always confident two tries would be enough as the way we've been defending has been outstanding. It always gets you thinking (when you conceded) and gets your brain ticking over. It was against the run of play, we gave a penalty away with the ball or whatever it was. There were a couple of penalties early in either half but we got through it.

"I'm really proud of that part, that's why I mentioned I was confident that we wouldn't let any more tries in.

"We're really proud of the players, we know there's some improvement there, we have a tough period of rugby coming the next couple of weeks, I think tonight the way that game pannned out was exactly what we needed as a team and the club."

On his side's poor starts, Lam added: "It is frustrating that we put ourselves under pressure like that and to be honest it's not good enough, it's too hard to play like that week in, week out.

"But the way we've handled that adversity, gone up the other end and got points has been pretty similar copy. That's an area we need to get better at and when we nail it, I think we'll be hard to beat."

The club has received a setback following an injury blow to Oliver Gildart that is set to delay his return to the team.

"Gildart had a bit of strain yesterday in training so it's probably set him back now a couple of weeks so that's frustrating for Oliver.

"But Bevan will be good to go and then we've to check on Dom Manfredi as the week unfolds. He's been doing everything he needs to, we'll just see how he fits in at training."
