Directors of the House of Councillors' Committee on Rules and Administration from both the ruling and opposition parties inspected a prototype accessibility ramp in the plenary session hall in Tokyo on Tuesday. Construction work on the actual ramp is scheduled to begin soon, with use expected to start during the ordinary Diet session next year.

The prototype is 7 meters long and 80 centimeters wide. The members checked its slope, width and other points. Yasuhiko Funago of the Reiwa Shinsengumi political party, and other 2 people using wheelchairs, won seats in last July's House of Councillors election. So, lawmakers are working to make the building barrier-free.

"We want to create the best House of Councillors in the world, open [to everyone]," Satoshi Oie, a committee director from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, told reporters after the inspection.
