Prototype Hermès bag designed for Jane Birkin sells for €7 million

Jane Birkin's original Hermès handbag has sold for €7 million (about £6 million) at a Sotheby's auction.
The sale took place in Paris on Thursday during Haute Couture Week, generating intense bidding.
The iconic bag was first conceived in the 1980s when Birkin asked then-Hermès head Jean-Louis Damas for a larger, more practical bag for mothers.
After designing the bag in 1984 with dedicated space for baby bottles, Hermès named the item after Birkin with her consent.
