Protests against CAA resume in Assam

Pressure groups affiliated with the North East Students’ Organisation (NESO) on Wednesday resumed the demand for the repeal of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act from the north-eastern region.

The groups also demanded the implementation of the British era inner-line permit (ILP) that would make it mandatory for Indians from beyond the northeast to enter the region with a temporary travel document.

The anti-CAA movement was suspended when the COVID-19 pandemic struck in March 2020.

“We have seen the fate of the indigenous people in Tripura. The same is happening in various parts of Assam. What is there to guarantee that the indigenous people of Meghalaya or the northeast will not face the same fate?” NESO chairman Samuel B. Jyrwa said.

“If the Centre says the CAA and AFSPA are for the protection of the citizens and if they consider us as citizens of India, then they should also fight for our protection,” he said.

Members of NESO affiliates in the other northeastern states also staged protests demanding the repeal of the CAA and AFSPA.
