Protesters turn up at Colston plinth for 'Bristol against hate' demo

Over 100 people have turned up at the empty Colston plinth in Bristol city centre this morning as part of the Bristol against hate demo.

Around seven different groups of protesters have grouped together in the centre, but are all protesting together to celebrate Bristol's diverse community and to show their solidary with the Black Lives Matter campaign.

Free food such as vegan chocolate crispy cakes and sandwiches are being given away by some groups while music and speeches are taking place at the plinth throughout the day.

Some protesters have written in chalk on the empty plinth where the Colston statue used to stand. Messages include promoting "revolution", "fighting against the EDL" and saying that "Bristol is anti-fascist". An anti-police message has also been written by the plinth.

The far-right organisation For Britain was also planning a demonstration at the empty plinth in Bristol today but called it off within the last week. The planned demonstration sparked a backlash in Bristol, with a range of campaign groups and organisations planning their own counter-demonstration at the plinth which was due to start two hours before.

It currently remains unknown whether the groups will be marching through the city centre this afternoon.
