Protesters to gather in Nottingham city centre in support of Palestine

Protesters will gather in Nottingham city centre at the weekend in the wake of Palestine's conflict with Israel.

It comes as an Israeli air strike killed 20 people including nine children in Palestine, Gaza's health officials have claimed as violent clashes escalate.

The missile strike came in response to Hamas firing rockets toward the Jerusalem area and southern Israel.

Militants were carrying out a threat to punish Israel for violent confrontations with Palestinians in Jerusalem in recent days.

The event will provide Palestinian food and music.

It will take place from 12 noon on Saturday May 15 in the Old Market Square and was set up by the Nottingham Palestine Solidarity Campaign.

Israel's military officials had earlier labelled the rocket attacks a "severe assault on Israel" and claimed rocket fire from Palestine had injured one person after a vehicle was struck in the south.

Israel's military retaliated by striking at Hamas military targets and sending in more troops to Gaza.

The UK, US and EU have called for calm in the region, with Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab calling for an "end to targeting civilian populations".
