Protesters to form human cycle lane to campaign for safer roads

Protesters are to form a human cycle lane in the north-east of Glasgow to campaign for safer cycle infrastructure.

Community cycling organisation On Bikes Glasgow will be performing the stunt on Cumbernauld Road tomorrow to allow young people to experience what it is like to cycle on a stretch of road separated from traffic.

The group argue that there is a lack of safe and segregated cycling infrastructure in the area, as other parts of the city start to build networks of cycle routes "transforming communities and the lives of those who live there."

On Bikes co-ordinator Ben Raw said: "By working together with different members of the community, including, Young People, Schools, Politicians from different parties, we are able to promote a powerful message. This message is that segregated and safe cycling infrastructure can transform communities and those that live within them!

"While there are wide roads in this part of the city, people cycling are forced to share space with fast moving traffic. This action is to highlight that we would like to see a network of segregated cycle lanes to allow safe cycling and particularly to give young people greater independence."

This event is part of a full weekend of cycling action co-ordinated by Pedal on Parliament (PoP), which is campaigning to make Scotland a cycle-friendly country.

Pedal on Parliament traditionally hold an annual mass ride to Holyrood to protest the need for better cycling ,provision, but are focusing on local protests this year, aimed at improvements that could be ,made by local councils.

Across this weekend “Pop-up PoPs” will be happening all over Scotland, with multiple protests highlighting the barriers to safe cycling that people find in their own areas. Expect to see events happening as far and wide as Inverness, Dumfries, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Stirling, Aberdeen and Dundee.

Campaigners will meet at human cycle lane on Cumbernauld Road will form at 2pm outside Riddrie Library.
