Protesters to descend on Headingley Stadium on Saturday over Azeem Rafiq racism scandal

A peaceful protest is planned at Headingley Stadium in Leeds this weekend following the Azeem Rafiq racism scandal.

Rafiq, who moved to England from Pakistan in 2001, claimed he was left feeling suicidal by his experiences of institutional racism at Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

Following an investigation commissioned by the club, seven of the 43 allegations were upheld in the report, which found that Rafiq had been the victim of “racial harassment and bullying”.

Despite offering an apology, the club went on to state that none of its employees would face any further action.

Yorkshire County Cricket Club chairman Roger Hutton has since resigned with multiple sponsors such as Nike and Yorkshire Tea also cutting ties with the club.

A peaceful protest has now been organised for Saturday, November 6, to "bring change" at Yorkshire County Cricket Club who play most of their home games at Headingley.

On a poster, organisers wrote: "Raise your voice in support against racism and bring change at Yorkshire County Cricket Club.

"Please join us for a peaceful protest to show solidarity with Azeem Rafiq."

The protest will take place at Headingley Stadium in Kirkstall Lane at Gate G at 3pm.

Organisers said antisocial behaviour was not welcome.
