PATIALA: Seeking job letters for the post of constable in Punjab Police, around 30 youth who were shortlisted for the job but kept in the waiting list in 2016, on Tuesday climbed water tank in protest against the state government for its failure to give them jobs. Some of the protesters even carried petrol-filled bottles with them.
The protesters claimed they have been protesting for around five years now, to get their appointment letters. They said the SAD-BJP government in Punjab had completed the recruitment procedure for 7,416 posts of constables in 2016. While 5,581 were given joining letters, 1,835 were kept in the waiting list.
Navdeep Singh, who was among the protesters, said, “Our recruitment got delayed with the change of government in 2017. During the previous government rule, we were shortlisted for the post.
However, 1,835 were kept in the waiting list. Later in 2017, over 300 recruited constables were removed from the jobs as their recruitment was done on the basis of fake SC/BC certificates. We are demanding that job letters be given to all the shortlisted candidates who have been kept in the waiting list since 2016.
The government has failed to pay any heed to our demands, so more than 30 protesters climbed to water tank on Passi road in Patiala for an indefinite period.”
