Protesters block main road in Bristol with buses delayed

Protesters have marched on a road in the city centre. (October 13, 2019)

A group of demonstrators bearing colourful banners outside the BBC building on Whitleladies Road.

They are rallying against the Turkish involvement in Syria and the killing of Kurdish people.

One banner read 'Fight fascism support Rojava' while another read 'Remember Anna Keep Fighting', the latter a reference to Bristol resident Anna Campbell who died fighting in Syria .

One eyewitness said a number of buses were held up by the protest, which started at around 1.30pm.

"They were in the middle of the road when I got to the BBC radio station," she said.

"I was only held up on the bus for a couple of minutes as they started to move but I don’t know how long other the other buses travelling to town was stopped for."

It is believed the large group have headed down Whiteladies Road in Clifton on to College Green before ending at the fountains in the centre of Bristol.

Anna, originally from Lewes, was killed in Afrin in March last year – the first British woman to die in Syria fighting with the all-female Kurdish YPJ forces.

Earlier this month protesters raised the profile of their cause by linking arms on an access road to the Airbus Filton site.
