Protester climbs crane to hang Black Lives Matter banner in Canning Town

A protester has scaled a crane and unfurled what appears to be a Black Lives Matter banner in east London this morning.

Video footage has been shared on social media of the person at the top of the crane in Hallsville Road, Canning Town, next to a Morrisons supermarket.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: “Police are aware of an ongoing protest in Hallsville Road, E16.

“A man has scaled a crane at the location. Officers are on scene.”

No arrest have taken place, the spokesperson added.

Keith Allen, a Canning Town resident who witnessed the drama unfolding, told the Standard the stunt had attracted attention from a number of passers-by below.

He said: “There were lots of police around and people watching from near the Morrisons below.

“I don’t know how he managed to get up there because it’s one of the big skyscraper cranes.

“It was hard to see exactly what was going on because the banner he displayed was too small to read.”
