Protest taking place today against banning of marches in Glasgow

A protest is taking place in Glasgow today in opposition to the prohibition of six marches in the city centre.

As reported by Glasgow Live earlier this week, the parades have been banned over fears for public safety after sectarian violence.

Scottish Protestants Against Discrimination and the Orange Order will oppose the decision outside the City Chambers from 10am.

A large police presence is being reported in George Square, with mounted officers and riot units out in force for a third weekend running.

Around 1,000 people are also reported to be in attentance.

The city's Public Processions Committee ordered the cancellation of this weekend's events on Wednesday.

Recent weeks have seen "unacceptable" disorder breaking out in connection with a number of marches and counter-protests.

A Glasgow City Council spokeswoman said: "The council has always been clear that the law expects it to facilitate public processions; including those that some people oppose or find offensive.

"However, the right to march has to be balanced against the rights of people and communities across Glasgow."
