Protest held outside Catholic church where priest was spat on as Orange Walk passes by

Campaigners have taken to the streets outside a Glasgow church today in protest at an Orange Walk.

Call It Out, a group campaigning against anti-Catholic bigotry, organised the silent demo outside St Alphonsus Church on London Road as a Dalmarnock O&P No50 District march passed by.

Canon Thomas White was attacked and subject to vile sectarian abuse outside the chapel in July last year.

Following the incident Bradley Wallace was jailed for 10 months in February after admitting assaulting the priest - a charge aggravated by religious prejudice.

Hatred and bigotry still on the march at Scotland’s walks of shame

Since the incident tensions have risen as campaigners call for Glasgow City Council and Police Scotland to reroute marches away from Catholic churches.

Protesters stood outside the place of worship holding a sign saying: "No anti-Catholic marches past Catholic Churches."

Call It Out also took to Twitter to say "Enough is enough".

They wrote: "An anti-Catholic march will again pass St Alphonsus Church, where Canon Tom White was assaulted last summer. Despite our efforts, @ GlasgowCC has refused to re-route this march.

"Join us today at 12.30pm outside the church as we stand in protest. Enough is enough."

Officers from Police Scotland were also seen outside the church to ensure there was no trouble.

The group who organised the walk, the Dalmarnock O&P No50 District, predicted around 100 people would be involved.

They assembled on Tullis Street and walked on Main Street, Dalmarnock Road, Springfield Road, Parkhead Cross, Duke Sreet, High Street, Glasgow Cross, Gallowgate, Moir Street, London Road, Bridgeton Cross, James Street, McKeith Street and Main Street.
