Protest calling for No War With Iran planned for Glasgow city centre

Glaswegians will gather in the city centre this evening to denounce the prospect of war between the US and Iran.

The No War With Iran - US Out of the Middle East demonstration is due to take place today (Monday, January 6) at 5.30pm on Buchanan Street steps, with some 150 people showing as 'attending' on a Facebook event page and a further 400 interested.

The Glasgow protest follows political disturbance unfolding on Friday after a US airstrike on Iran resulted in the death of seven people, including Iran’s top general Qasem Soleimani. This has drastically worsened relations between Iran and the US.

The event is being organised by Glasgow Stop the War Coalition, a non-profit organisation dedicated to the prevention of war, who claim that “the assassination of Iranian general Qassem Soleimani is an act of war by Donald Trump.”

Organisers say the assassination of Soleimani “fans the flames of war against Iran, a war that could escalate across the Middle East”.

Similar demonstrations have taken place since Trump withdrew from the Iran Nuclear deal in May of 2018.

Concerns have been growing as Iran’s military advisor has promised retaliation. The US has since deployed thousands of troops to the Middle East in preparation for military response.

The protest, part of a global campaign to minimise the chance of a violent retaliation, will issue a call for the UK Government to "publicly oppose any military action against Iran".
