Around 200 people from Israel’s right-wing took part on Sunday in a protest outside the home of Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit over his decision to take Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to trial on corruption charges.
Right-wing activist Avi Saban, who is close to Netanyahu, said that the protests will not stop until Mandelblit submits his resignation.
Protesters chanted slogans such as, “People demand legal justice” and “We won’t leave until you resign”.
Mandelblit made his decision last year, and the trial is scheduled next Sunday.
Israeli strategic analyst in Maarive Ben Kasbit said that Mandelblit is closer to the protesters than Netanyahu himself. He made charges against Netanyahu, including purchasing four German submarines.
Yet, the PM's supporters lashed out at him over his decision to send Netanyahu to trial, which was due to open in March but was postponed for two months because of the state of emergency declared to fight the coronavirus pandemic.
At the start of the trial, the indictment on charges of bribery, breach of trust and fraud will be read.
Based on the agreement between the prosecution and defense ministry, Netanyahu will attend his trial three times a week. They also agreed to reduce the number of witnesses from 333 to 100 including three top witnesses who are high-ranking officials from the prime minister’s office.
