Protective dog refuses to leave sick owner as he wears respiratory machine to sleep

It's no secret that animals often do the sweetest things and one dog has captured hearts after he showed just how much he cared about his owner.

A golden retriever was filmed refusing to leave his sick owner's side as he slept using a ventilator for the first time.

The dog, named Mao Mao belongs to Mr Shao who lives in the city of Xinxiang in Henan Province.

Two-year-old Mao Mao can be seen in the clip putting his head on his owner's chest as he lays in bed, wearing a respiratory machine.

The video was captured on April 15, 2020.

Shao suffers from high blood pressure and heart disease and can sometimes experience sudden cardiac arrest, so a doctor suggested he sleep with a respiratory machine.

The adorable pooch seems concerned about the owner, despite Shao's reassurance.

In the clip, Shao can be heard telling the dog: "Don't worry, I am alright. You can go."

Mao Mao has continued to stay beside Shao when he sleeps ever since that first night with the machine.

This comes after a survey revealed that over a third of dogs bought or adopted during the coronavirus pandemic had never been to the park.

According to new research by pet wellness experts Itch as many as three in five (62%) lockdown dogs have never even left their own home.

And if that weren't sad enough, two out of five pups are yet to be introduced to another dog and almost half have never met a child.

The results also showed that 71% of new owners are concerned their dog will have separation-related issues once life returns to normal.

More than 40% had also experienced regret over their decision to purchase a puppy, with many admitting they hadn't realised the amount of work that goes into raising and caring for a dog.
