Poor Monica Lewinsky. She's had a rough few years. Now she's decided to make a change of direction in her life and is starting a masters degree in London next Thursday. Like any fresher, she's trying to keep her head down, writes David Fickling.
There's a lot to rise above. Like the fact that Monica! The Musical - a "surprisingly warmhearted" version of the scandal that made her famous - premiered on Broadway yesterday. Or the way the British tabloids turned up to see her signing her enrolment form at the London School of Economics.
But some things can try a woman's patience too far. Little things. Things like a Chinese company using your name for a brand of condoms.
Of course, Monica's not alone in this. The Guangzhou Haojian Bioscience company has announced it will also be marketing Bill Clinton-branded condoms, although in Chinese the names come out as Kelitun and Laiwensiji.
Liu Wenhua, the company's general manager, described the product in terms that would make Barbara Cartland swoon in her grave. "We chose the name because we think Clinton is a symbol of success and a man of responsibility," he said. "And Lewinsky is a woman who dares to love and dares to hate."
Pretty words - but something about the merchandising adds insult to injury. Perhaps it's the way the Clinton condoms will sell for £2 for a 12-pack, whereas the same number of Lewinskys will set you back £1.20.
It's not as though there's any sort of shortage of merchandise alluding to even the scandal's most intimate details. The stuff for sale on eBay runs the gamut from the crude through the sad to the downright creepy.
On some level, it must be a relief that there are people out there who are on her side. People who are inspired by her. Sane people.
