LONDON (AP) — The prevalence of phone thefts has become a significant concern due to the vast amount of personal data stored on these devices. In response to the surge in phone thefts, the British government is collaborating with tech companies and device manufacturers to address the issue.

There are several proactive measures individuals can take to safeguard their phones before and after a theft occurs. Implementing basic protections such as setting up password or biometric locks, enabling the find my device feature, and backing up important data are crucial steps to mitigate the impact of a stolen phone.

Newer features introduced in recent iOS and Android updates offer enhanced security measures. For instance, iPhone users can activate Stolen Device Protection, while Android phones now utilize artificial intelligence to detect theft-related motion and lock the screen immediately.

It is advisable to record your phone's serial number, also known as an IMEI number, as it can aid in recovery efforts if the device is stolen. In the unfortunate event of a theft, individuals should notify the police, their insurance company, phone service provider, and bank to take appropriate actions.

Tracking a stolen phone can be attempted using services like find my device for iOS and Android, which display the device's location on a map. Additionally, users can remotely lock the phone, display contact information on the screen, and erase data to prevent unauthorized access.

As a final precaution, individuals should log out of all accounts accessible on the stolen phone, remove it from trusted devices lists, and consider remote erasure if recovery seems unlikely. It is essential to exercise caution and prioritize personal safety by involving law enforcement rather than attempting to retrieve the device independently.
