Protect Our Pensioners: OAP conned out of thousands in cruel Bitcoin scam

A Paisley pensioner lost tens of thousands of pounds to crooks after getting caught up in a cruel Bitcoin scam.

The 68-year-old believed he was investing a five-figure sum of cash in the digital currency, but he was actually lining the pockets of criminal gangs.

Police are investigating the devastating fraud and warned Express readers that if a deal appears too good to be true, then it probably is.

The OAP believed he was turning a huge profit after the scamster sent him official-looking documents and charts showing how much money he was making.

Over the course of a year, he sent more and more money to the con artists after responding to an email before finally realising he had been duped when the website disappeared.

Inspector Tracy Harkins, from Paisley’s community policing team, has urged people to be aware of email scams and always seek advice from the authorities before handing over money.

She said: “The 68-year-old man was cruelly convinced he was investing in online currency Bitcoin. However, the money was actually going to criminals.

“The victim has lost a five-figure sum of money over the course of a year.

“It has been devastating for him and we are now investigating.”

She added: “I would urge anyone who receives an email they are not sure about or appears too good to be true, then please delete it immediately.

“Check reviews of the company online to see how reputable they are before engaging in any way with them.

“You can also contact the Financial Conduct Authority for advice relating to financial matters online.

“If you think you may have been the victim of an online scam, please contact police on 101 or Action Fraud on 0300 123 2040.

“We understand that some people may be embarrassed about falling foul to scams or frauds, but it is important to remember that criminals both online and in person can be very
convincing.”

The despicable fraud comes as the Express’ Protect Our Pensioners campaign continues to highlight scams and bogus callers targeting the region's vulnerable and elderly.

We have been working with Police Scotland and Roar: Connections for Life to raise awareness of crooks’ dodgy practises.

If you have been the victim of a scam and would like to share your story to alert others, please call the Express on 0141 309 3185 or 0141 309 3352.
