The cabinet has approved in principle a draft ministerial regulation sponsored by the Interior Ministry that would allow public prosecutors to carry firearms while on duty.
Under the draft, the Office of the Attorney-General (OAG) will be added to the existing list of state agencies not covered by the 1947 firearms law. The draft is an amendment to a 2010 ministerial regulation, said Maj Gen Atisit Chainuwat, a PM's Office spokesman.
The planned amendment should help prosecutors carry out their duties more effectively, as required under the Criminal Procedures Code and the Prevention and Suppression of Participation in Transnational Organised Crime Act, Maj Gen Atisit said.
The draft will be submitted to the Council of State, the government's legal adviser, for scrutiny.
