HARTFORD, Conn. _ The suicide note Aaron Hernandez wrote to fiancee Shayanna Jenkins offers a glimpse into his state of mind on April 19, the morning the former New England Patriots star was found hanged in his Massachusetts jail cell.
The note, released Friday by prosecutors, contains religious references that echo the inmates interviewed during an investigation of the 27-year-old's death, who said Hernandez had become more spiritual, even speaking of reincarnation the night before his death.
"I told you what was coming indirectly! I love you so much and know you are an angel _ Eternally," Hernandez wrote to Jenkins. " ... This was the supremes, the almightys plan, not mine!"
Hernandez was serving a life sentence for the murder of Odin Lloyd. He had recently been acquitted of murder in a second case.
In the suicide note, Hernandez tells Jenkins to "live life" and to "tell my story fully but never think anything besides how much I love you."
He also tells her to look after "my boys" _ two names are redacted from the letter _ and adds an underlined note in parentheses: "Youre rich."
The letter ends with the name of a pop song and the artist: "I knew I loved you (equal sign) Savage Garden."
A copy of the note was filed in court Friday by the Massachusetts District Attorney's Office, which is opposing an effort by Hernandez's lawyers to formally vacate his 2015 conviction for Lloyd's murder, which was under appeal.
Prosecutors also filed a summary of interviews with inmates in Hernandez's housing unit, some of whom claimed to be close friends of Hernandez.
One inmate told investigators that Hernandez came to his door before lock-in the night on April 18 and stated, "Remember when you die your soul gets reincarnated," the record states. Another inmate said Hernandez had recently mentioned "a rumor" that if an inmate has an open appeal on his case and dies in prison, he is acquitted of his charges and deemed not guilty, according to the record.
Investigators found three handwritten notes next to a Bible in Hernandez's cell and the message John 3:16 written on the wall, apparently in his own blood, the Massachusetts State Police have reported. Hernandez also wrote John 3:16 on his forehead, highlighted a passage in an open Bible and drew circular marks on each of his feet, all using his own blood, according to police.
He had a cut on his right middle finger.
Investigators also found that Hernandez had jammed cardboard into the door tracks of his cell to prevent anyone from entering.
