The Tokyo District Public Prosecutors Office obtained arrest warrants for three American men, who allegedly helped former Nissan Motor Co. Chairman Carlos Ghosn flee abroad while out on bail, on suspicion of aiding a criminal in avoiding capture in violation of the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Law.
Prosecutors also got an arrest warrant for Ghosn himself for violating the law.
Ghosn, 65, has been indicted for aggravated breach of trust in violation of the Companies Law.
Since Dec. 31 last year when it became clear that Ghosn had fled to Lebanon, prosecutors have been investigating how he managed to escape Japan. After analyzing security footage at his house in Azabu, Tokyo, where he stayed while out on bail, it was found that he left his house alone at around 2:30 p.m. on Dec. 29 last year.
With the cooperation of the Metropolitan Police Department, prosecutors traced his whereabouts by connecting video footage from security cameras installed around his house. They found that after he left the premises, Ghosn met with the three men at a luxury hotel in Roppongi, Tokyo, and headed for Osaka on a Shinkansen train with two of them.
It is believed that it is highly likely that Ghosn escaped Japan with the two men on a private jet from Kansai Airport.
