BRIEF: Prosecutors: McDonald's employee attacks customer, damaging man's eye

March 16--A McDonald's employee from Chicago was ordered held in lieu of $40,000 bail Sunday after prosecutors said he attacked a customer while working at a Near West Side location last month, leaving the victim with permanent eye damage.

Darrell Haynes, 35, was charged with aggravated battery causing great bodily harm in the Feb. 25 incident, according to Cook County court records.

Haynes got into an argument with a customer while working the register at the McDonald's near West Madison Street and South Western Avenue, according to court records and Assistant State's Attorney Jennifer Walsh.

Haynes followed the man, whose age was not given in court records, outside to a nearby parking lot, Walsh said.

He struck the victim several times in the face, rupturing his right eyeball and dislocating the lens, according to court records.

The victim has no vision in his right eye, Walsh said, and will have some level of permanent vision loss.

Both the victim and a witness with the victim identified Haynes.

Haynes, of the 2800 block of West Flournoy Street, was arrested Thursday, after police contacted him and he met them at his mother's residence, according to court records.
