Prosecutors: Man smoked crack before fatal stabbing on South Side

Nov. 04--Prosecutors said a 43-year-old man accused in a Saturday fatal stabbing had smoked crack cocaine before attacking his victim.

According to court documents, Brandon Young and two others were in a South Shore neighborhood apartment early Saturday. The three smoked crack, then Young and one of them left to buy more, prosecutors said.

When the two returned, the three smoked crack a second time. Later, Young and a witness went into a bedroom to get ready for bed while the third person stayed in the living room. At some point, Young went back into the living room and began to stab the third person, prosecutors said.

Prosecutors said the witness, who was in the bedroom, heard moaning and went into the living room and saw Young stabbing the third person, later identified as Dorian D. Smith. The witness then ran back to the bedroom to call police, but Young, who had a knife in both hands, followed and took the phone away, prosecutors said.

Young then left the apartment and went home, where he called police. Officers arrested Young and found 8-inch and 3-1/2 inch knives on the floor of his apartment, prosecutors said.

Smith, 43, of the 7800 block of South Shore Drive, was pronounced dead at 1:11 a.m. Saturday at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.

Prosecutors said Smith suffered 12 stab wounds, including to the outer hand, rear ribcage and back. His chin and lip were almost severed from his face.

Young, who was convicted in 2009 of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, was charged with first-degree murder. He appeared at a bail hearing Wednesday afternoon where Cook County Judge Laura Sullivan ordered him held on $750,000 bond.
