Prosecutors: Gunman shot victim after their teenage sisters fought

Oct. 28--A man on probation was ordered held in lieu of $800,000 bail after he shot another man following a fight between their teenage sisters earlier this month, prosecutors said Tuesday.

Otha Calhoun, 22, shot a 20-year-old man Oct. 8 in the 6700 block of South Hermitage Avenue after the teenage sisters of Calhoun and the victim got into a fight, Cook County state's attorney's spokeswoman Tandra Simonton said. Police originally had said the shooting took place on 68th Street.

The girls fought that day, and afterward the victim was standing near the entrance to his home when Calhoun came up to him and shot him at point-blank range, prosecutors said.

A witness told police Calhoun used profanity to say that no one could do something to his sister and get away with it.

The victim was shot in the leg and abdomen; his femur, kidney and intestines were injured, prosecutors said.

A witness and the victim identified Calhoun as the shooter.

Calhoun is on probation in two criminal cases from 2012, one involving aggravated battery to a police officer and the other involving a drug charge, prosecutors said. Calhoun appeared before Judge Maria Kuriakos Ciesil on charges of attempted murder and aggravated battery involving the discharge of a firearm and is scheduled to appear in court again Nov. 3.
