Prosecutors in Racine County dropped a marijuana possession against Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith, according to online court records obtained by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel.
Last September, Smith was charged with speeding and marijuana possession after being pulled over on I-94 between Chicago and Green Bay. Prosecutors dropped the marijuana charge and reduced the speeding ticket, and Smith pled no contest to driving 11-14 miles per hour over the speed limit.
Smith, the Packers’ top defensive player last season, was clocked going 81 miles per hour in a 60 miles per hour zone and admitted to smoking marijuana in Chicago before driving back to Green Bay with rookies Kingsley Keke and Rashan Gary. Officers on the scene found marijuana and drug paraphernalia in a bag in the vehicle.
It’s unclear if Smith will face punishment from the NFL over the incident. The league has changed its drug policy relating to marijuana, limiting punishment powers. Players can no longer be suspended under the new guidelines, but Smith’s incident happened in 2019.
Smith, who signed a four-year deal with the Packers last March, delivered 13.5 sacks and was named to the Pro Bowl last season.
