Prosecutor: Man demanded loyalty before fatally shooting friend in the face

Feb. 06--A 20-year-old man was ordered held without bail Friday after being charged with murder in the fatal shooting of one man and the wounding of another in a Far South Side shooting.

Joshua Poe, 20, appeared in bond court at the Leighton Criminal Court Building after being charged with first-degree murder and one felony count of aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm in the shooting.

About 3:10 p.m. Wednesday, Poe was with Curtis Lyons, a good friend, and a younger man, a cousin, in the basement of Poe's home in the 3100 block of West 84th Place.

Poe had spent the morning and afternoon smoking K2 synthetic marijuana when Lyons, 20, began to roll a "blunt" of regular marijuana, Assistant Cook County State's Attorney Sarah Karr said. The younger man had not taken any drugs, Karr said.

"Out of the blue (Poe) grabbed a semi-auto handgun that had been on a table nearby," Karr said, and stood over the men, who were on a coach in the basement.

"(Poe) was swinging the gun and asking about Lyons' loyalty. The victims tried to calm Poe down, but the defendant pointed the gun and shot Lyons in the face," she said.

According to Karr, Poe shot the 19-year-old in the thigh. The younger man then asked Poe to take him to the hospital, and Poe helped him outside, prosecutors said.

When they went outside, Poe allegedly tossed the gun and its ammunition magazine in the snow. Poe then pushed the victim to the ground and left him there, Karr said. The 19-year-old limped back into the basement, where he called a friend, who called the man's mother, and she notified police, Karr said.

The man was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center, where he was treated for the wound to his right thigh, which suffered a fractured femur. His condition stabilized.

Lyons, of the 8000 block of South Richmond Street, was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy determined that he died of a gunshot wound to the head.

The gun was found outside where Poe tossed it, Karr said.

Poe, who was a few houses away from the shooting scene, was picked up by someone in a car. When that person found out about the shooting, he alerted police, who then pulled over the vehicle and arrested Poe. Poe's clothes had blood on them, Karr said.

Poe had been on parole after being convicted of possession of a stolen firearm.
