Flats proposed for listed Nottingham building would provide one of the best views of city centre

If approved, they would certainly be a room with a view in the heart of Nottingham city centre. A listed building overlooking Old Market Square could be turned into studio flats.

Proposals have been submitted seeking permission and listed planning consent to turn the first floor, at 30-32 Long Row, into six one-bed apartments. The space is currently office accommodation.

The grade II listed property is also within Old Market Square Conservation Area. The flats would look out onto Slab Square and the Council House.

No alterations are planned to the exterior except the creation of a single window on the first floor overlooking the side passageway. The ground floor of the property is a restaurant, Slim Chickens. The second and third storeys were converted into four-bed homes in 2018.

The plans submitted to Nottingham City Council by Tempophase Limited refer to how the site was once home to the Ram Hotel around the turn of the 20th century. It was later demolished.

Eve Farmer, 21, who works at vintage clothing shop Braderie, said: "That is a sociable area of the city so it is a nice area to be looking out onto.” Nottingham Trent University student Alex Dobbis, 21, said: "It is good for the area to have more flats available in the heart of Nottingham."

Bird & Blend tea shop assistant, Melissa Perrin, 40, said: "If there’s a need for more city accommodation then it’s better for the building to be utilised. It depends who they’re going to target."

Wellgosh shop worker Heidi Wiltshire said: "You have a lot of students here so possible student accommodation is always needed. There are loads of empty units around so it is better to have something fill it."
