Proposal to build over 500 apartments in Howth lodged with An Bord Pleanala

An application to build over 500 apartments in Howth have been lodged with the planning authority.

The proposed development will see a total of 512 units being built in place of the former Techrete factory near the DART station.

The proposal was lodged by Atlas with An Bord Pleanala and the number of units in the plans is considerably higher compared to the previous applications which saw objections from locals.

The plans include 512 one and two bedroom apartments in blocks which would be eight storeys in height, the Irish Times reports.

The proposal also includes a walkway and cycleway which will be accessible to the public as well as a civic plaza, a landscaped park, and communal gardens.

Social Democrats councillor Cian O’Callaghan said the redevelopment needs to make a “positive contribution” to the community.

He said: “While there is support in the local community for the site to be developed there are understandable concerns about the sheer scale of this proposal and the impact that it would have on local traffic congestion and the village character of Howth. These concerns need to be addressed.

"The understandable concerns of the local community about how these latest proposals to intensify development at the site will impact on the village character of Howth and traffic congestion must be addressed.”

A spokesman for developer Marlet, of which Atlas is a subsidiary, said that urban development needs a “delicate balance” between car parking and incorporation into already established traffic flows “while at the same time following national policy towards reducing car-usage and utilising existing public transport”.

He added: “We were very conscious of this in making this application.”
