Proposal for 80 new homes in Ashington lodged with Northumberland County Council

Full plans for the second half of a major housing development in Ashington have now been lodged.

Taylor Wimpey has submitted a reserved matters application to Northumberland County Council seeking approval of the details of its proposal for 80 new homes on land south of Newbiggin Road and east of Freeman Way.

The wider site already has outline permission for a total of 240 homes and fellow house-builder Bellway is currently constructing 92 two, three and four-bedroom properties on the eastern half of the site, known as Essendene Rise.

The first outline scheme was lodged back in 2014 before being refused in November 2015, as the site, on the northern edge of North Seaton Industrial Estate, was designated employment land.

An appeal was lodged, but later withdrawn when an almost identical application was approved by the county council in July 2016, due to the land no longer being earmarked as employment land in the latest draft of the local plan. Bellway's plan was given the go-ahead a year later.

Now, the latest application suggests that the overall number of homes on the site will end up being 172, a little under three-quarters of what is permitted.

The Taylor Wimpey scheme would consist of 54 three-bedroom houses and 26 four-bedroom properties, a mix of detached and semi-detached, mainly two storeys, but with 'occasional' two-and-a-half-storey dwellings.

The site will be accessed through the existing Bellway development off the B1334 Newbiggin Road.

A design and access statement with the application says: 'The proposed dwellings are of a traditional scale and massing, being two-storey in height and providing a mixture of detached and semi-detached properties.

'The use of integral garages is proposed as well as the use of off-street frontage/side car parking, which has ensured in-curtilage parking for all new residents.

'This has further allowed for frontage landscaping along the street scene where both tree and shrub planting has been utilised to reinforce the public and private realm.

'The proposed dwellings will have a modern architectural style reflecting the surrounding residential area.'
