Property firm secures deal for one of the oldest pubs in Derbyshire

A property firm is celebrating after sealing deals for two prominent pubs located in and around a Derbyshire market town.

Licensed property specialists James A Baker has announced that in the last couple weeks it has completed deals on both The Horns, in Victoria Square, Ashbourne, and The Bluebell Inn, at Tissington, which is just north of the town.

The Bluebell has been shut since it went on the market more than a year ago. The pub, which is situated on the A515, between Ashbourne and Buxton was once popular with visitors to the Peak District, including walkers using the nearby Tissington Trail.

The ground floor featured a bar/lounge and a central serving area that could accommodate around 50 covers. On the first floor, the pub’s private accommodation boasted three double bedrooms, a living room, kitchen, bathroom and toilet.

It also came with a function suite capable of serving 80 covers, a 70-space car park and a spacious beer garden.

The Horns, which went up for sale towards the end of last year, is believed to be one of Derbyshire’s oldest pubs and is thought to date back to the 1600s.

According to local historians, The Horns is the oldest original pub in the town. It began as a small alehouse with an open courtyard to the rear. It later expanded into a neighbouring butcher’s shop - and the original walk-in meat storage cupboard can still be seen in one of the rooms.

It not yet know who the new owners are of The Bluebell and The Horns.

James A Baker is currently marketing the Kings Head pub in Ilkeston (James A Baker)

In the meantime, James A Baker, which has branches in Birmingham, London, Leeds and Bath, is currently marketing another Derbyshire pub - the Kings Head in Ilkeston.

Amy Potter, surveyor in James A Baker’s Birmingham office, said that the firm had received a lot of inquiries from both prospective purchasers and sellers over the summer.

She said: “There’s usually a bit of a lull over summer months but it doesn’t seem to be the case this year.

“We’ve been very busy taking inquiries and overseeing sales. To have two premises in relatively close proximity sell around the same time is testament to the hard work of everyone in the team.

“James A Baker has a long and proud track record of licensed property sales around the country. We are always happy to offer advice and guidance to prospective sellers and buyers alike.”
