'Proper finish' - Leeds United loanee's wonderstrike draws praise from Michael Owen

The Whites youngster smashed home his seventh goal of the season in terrific fashion as he scored a goal-of-the-season contender for the Latics during their 2-1 win over Exeter City.

McCalmont latched on to a clearing header on the edge of the area and volleyed past the goalkeeper first time, with the ball nestling into the top corner.

The goal drew plaudits from across the country and Owen, whose sports management firm represents the 21-year-old, joined in with a comment on the youngster's Instagram page.

McCalmont wrote: "3 points & a goal @officialoafc," with a video of the striker, to which Owen replied: "Proper finish. Steward not that impressed though."

Recently-appointed Oldham boss Keith Curle was full of praise for McCalmont after his long-range stunner.

The goal helped hand Curle his first victory as Latics' boss and the manager told the Oldham Chronicle that he was impressed by McCalmont.

He said: "There was understanding and real desire out there.

"I'm delighted for Alfie, too. He used great technique for his goal.

"He was exactly where he needed to be when the ball came to him and he produced a composed finish."

Among others that commented were Jamie Shackleton, Jack Clarke, Sam Greenwood, Ryan Edmondson and Niall Huggins.
