Oldest children really do get given more pocket money, new research has shown.
Figures from Charter Savings Bank shows first-born children receive an average 14.61 a week from parents compared to £10.90 a week for second children.
Worse, it doesn't stop with mum and dad, with grandparents also pay more to first borns - at £10.08 a week, compared to £9.10 a week for their second grandchild.
But things change a little for third-born children, who only receive the least from their parents at £9.13 a week on average, but more than second children from their grandparents at £9.54 a week.
Charter Savings Bank executive director Paul Whitlock said: “Being the oldest child is beneficial when it comes to pocket money, perhaps because parents have more disposable income with their first child than they do with subsequent children."
When asked why there was a gap between what's paid, parents said the key factors were the age of the child and what they can afford.
The research also discovered that children start receiving pocket money from their grandparents at four and their parents at five.
Parents used pocket money as a way of teaching children about the value of work and time, with most expecting their offspring to have done something to deserve their financial reward.
Favourite tasks are household chores, behaving well and doing their homework.
"Pocket money is an incredibly useful way to educate children about the importance of both hard work and saving," Whitlock.
But it seems, by paying older children more, they're also teaching their children about the reality of life's inequality and unfairness too.
